The Turkish and Syrian armies have built a floating wartime bridge in Mayadin, east of Deir ez-Zor, to restore transport between the two banks of the Euphrates River.
Nuh Yılmaz, Türkiye’s ambassador to Damascus, announced that the bridge was completed on August 30. Referring to the date, which is celebrated in Türkiye as Victory Day, Yılmaz said the Turkish and Syrian armed forces were building the future together in peacetime as well.
Built to replace a bridge destroyed by flooding
The new bridge was installed to replace the old bridge, which became unusable because of flooding. It is the second bridge project carried out through cooperation between the Turkish and Syrian armed forces.
Syrian Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra also announced that the bridge’s installation had been completed in cooperation with the Turkish army. Engineering units from the Syrian Ministry of Defense and Türkiye’s Ministry of National Defense jointly carried out the bridge’s assembly.
Crossings and transport to resume
The bridge is intended to restore crossings between the two banks of the Euphrates, facilitate transportation for local residents and help move products and commercial goods between the east and west.
Ghazi Shabib, the Syrian Defense Ministry official responsible for bridges, said the structure was a temporary emergency solution that would be used until infrastructure damage was repaired and permanent solutions were found.
New bridge sent to the area on August 26
The Syrian Defense Ministry sent the bridge to Mayadin on August 26 in preparation for its assembly. The stated aim of the project was to reduce the transportation burden between the two banks of the river.
Another floating bridge built by Türkiye over the Euphrates River became operational on July 12. Türkiye’s Ministry of National Defense said that more than 237,000 vehicles had crossed the bridge within one month as of August 15.
