The Turkish National Weightlifting Team is continuing its preparations for two major events at a training camp in a hotel in Adapazarı. Under head coach Gökhan Kuşçuoğlu, the national athletes are getting ready for the Mediterranean Games in Italy and the World Championships in China.
Five athletes set for Mediterranean Games
Five weightlifters will represent Turkey at the Mediterranean Games in Italy from August 21 to September 3. The athletes are:
- Ferdi Hardal
- Yusuf Fehmi Genç
- Kerem Kurnaz
- Hakan Şükrü Kurnaz
- Muhammet Emin Burun
Head coach Kuşçuoğlu stated that they expect medals from these five athletes.
World Championships and Olympic quota target
The World Weightlifting Championships to be held in China from October 27 to November 8 carry Olympic quota significance for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Turkey will compete there with 10 athletes. Kuşçuoğlu stated that they again expect a gold medal from last year's world champion Muhammed Furkan Özbek, and also hope for success from Yusuf Fehmi Genç and Kaan Kahriman in the quota competition.
Athletes' views
World and European champion Hakan Şükrü Kurnaz, 22, said he started weightlifting 15 years ago under his father's guidance. Reminding that he became world champion in Saudi Arabia in 2021, Kurnaz said, "Our priority is the Mediterranean Games, then we will go to the World Championships for the quota competition. We plan to get the Olympic ticket."
National athlete Yusuf Fehmi Genç, noting that he has four world and five European titles, emphasized that their main goal is the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympics. Genç said, "The Mediterranean Games in Italy are also important for us. We want to achieve good results and bring a gold medal to our country."
Noting that the training is continuing at a disciplined and intense pace, the athletes added that coaches are closely involved with them and that they are aware the competitors are strong.
