Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi and Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner met in Ankara on Tuesday as part of the fourth meeting of the Joint Cooperation Mechanism. Delegations from both countries also attended the meeting.
According to a statement from the Interior Ministry, the meeting addressed ways to develop security cooperation between Türkiye and Austria, combat terrorist organizations and organized crime networks, and pursue joint steps in the coming period.
Emphasis on security and migration management
Çiftçi said relations between Türkiye and Austria had progressed positively in recent years with the support of high-level contacts between the two countries. Highlighting the importance of cooperation between the two interior ministries, Çiftçi said that work across a wide range of areas, particularly security and migration management, would bring significant gains for both countries at a time of growing political and economic uncertainty.
Çiftçi said the Joint Cooperation Mechanism, which provides the institutional foundation for cooperation between the two ministries, had demonstrated its value.
Combating terrorism and organized crime
Speaking about the fight against terrorist organizations, Çiftçi said Türkiye was making a significant contribution to regional security and stability through its determined fight against terrorist organizations, particularly the PKK, the Gülen organization and Daesh.
Çiftçi also drew attention to the cross-border nature of organized crime networks. He said these structures operate globally in areas such as drug trafficking, migrant smuggling, human trafficking, cybercrime, money laundering and arms smuggling.
Çiftçi noted that the financing sources, logistical links and leadership cadres of organized crime networks are spread across different countries. He said next-generation criminal organizations were seeking to expand their areas of operation and recruit new members by using digital platforms and communication tools. Çiftçi said the Interior Ministry was continuing its determined fight against these structures.
