Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Falih al-Zeidi ordered the completion of a strategic pipeline project that will enable oil exports via Türkiye and Syria in line with the specified standards.
Iraqi Oil Minister Basim Khudr, ministry officials and representatives of the companies carrying out the project attended the meeting chaired by al-Zeidi. The meeting addressed the project’s technical and economic details, as well as the export routes.
It comprises two routes
The Basra–Haditha–Faysh Khabur route runs from the oil fields in southern Iraq to Haditha and then to Faysh Khabur, near the Turkish border. The plan is to connect this line to the Kirkuk–Ceyhan pipeline and export the oil through the Port of Ceyhan on the Mediterranean coast.
The Haditha–Baniyas route runs from western Iraq to Syria’s Port of Baniyas. While providing Iraq with an additional outlet for oil exports, this line could enable the historic oil route between Syria and Iraq to be used again.
Aim to diversify oil exports
The meeting also assessed the expected volumes of oil to be exported through the two lines and the project’s long-term economic and development-related effects. Al-Zeidi said the crude oil export pipeline project was of strategic importance to Iraq and would strengthen its export capacity.
Al-Zeidi said the project would serve Iraq’s economic and development-related interests both today and in the future. The Oil Ministry was also instructed to provide the necessary conditions for the work of the companies carrying out the project.
