Türkiye’s Defense Ministry released a special video to mark the 488th anniversary of the Battle of Preveza and Navy Day, saluting “all the heroic personnel of our Turkish Naval Forces who resolutely protect our rights and interests at sea.”
Fifteen warships, including TCG İstanbul, TCG Oruçreis and TCG Salihreis, sailed through the Bosporus under its three bridges and saluted off Beşiktaş pier. A ceremony at the tomb of Barbaros Hayreddin Pasha in Beşiktaş, where a wreath was laid, was led by Northern Sea Area Commander Ramazan Özoğul.
The Ottoman fleet under Barbaros Hayreddin Pasha defeated the Holy League fleet at Preveza on September 27, 1538.
Of the 15 vessels in the Bosporus sail-past, 13 were surface ships and two were the submarines TCG 18 Mart and TCG Doğanay. The ministry’s video features archive footage of the Turkish Navy. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan congratulated the Navy and commemorated Grand Admiral Barbaros Hayreddin Pasha, “who made the Mediterranean a Turkish lake with this glorious victory.”
