Türkiye’s first floating gas production platform, Osman Gazi, will depart from Zonguldak’s Filyos Port for the operating field in the Black Sea on Saturday, October 17. The platform is planned to operate at the Sakarya Gas Field, approximately 170 kilometres offshore.
The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources said Osman Gazi’s commissioning is intended to increase daily domestic natural gas production at the field from 9.5 million cubic metres to 20 million cubic metres. The platform is expected to operate in the Black Sea for 20 years.
The platform’s technical specifications
Osman Gazi was announced to be 298.5 metres long, 56 metres wide and 29.5 metres high at the hull. The platform was designed to accommodate 140 personnel.
Of the 21 technological facilities on the upper deck, 11 were rebuilt in line with the characteristics of the Sakarya Gas Field. Seven of these facilities were manufactured in Türkiye and four abroad. The other 10 facilities were modernised and integrated into the platform’s production system.
During preparations in Filyos, approximately 6 kilometres of electrical cable was laid each day. The total length of electrical cables on the platform reached 642 kilometres, while the length of the pipelines installed reached approximately 30 kilometres. Around 7,000 people took part in the work.
First gas flaring planned for this year
A 96-metre-high flare tower was installed on the platform in August to safely release and burn hydrocarbon gases in emergencies. The tower’s base covers approximately 65 square metres and its weight was announced as 260 tonnes.

Following Osman Gazi’s arrival at the operating field, the first gas flaring is planned to take place by the end of the year, while industrial production is scheduled to begin at the start of 2027. The platform will serve as a floating processing complex that prepares extracted natural gas for transfer to Türkiye’s national gas transmission network.
Annual contribution of $3.5 billion expected for the economy
The daily natural gas volume produced by the platform is expected to be worth approximately $10 million at current prices, while the project’s annual contribution to Türkiye’s economy is estimated to reach $3.5 billion.
Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar said Osman Gazi would double production at the Sakarya Gas Field and increase the number of households whose natural gas needs are met with domestic resources from 4 million to 8 million.
Osman Gazi was first mentioned in July 2024. The platform was named Osman Gazi on May 27, 2025, and departed from the Dolmabahçe Working Office in Istanbul for Filyos Port on May 29, 2025. Accreditation and certification procedures, along with extensive modernisation work, were completed in Filyos.
