UK Middle East Minister Stephen Doughty condemned Israeli forces’ forced entry into the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) education center in occupied East Jerusalem.
Doughty described the forced entry into UNRWA’s Qalandia Training Center in Jerusalem and the seizure of the facility as “extreme.” Saying that the center had provided education and opportunities to Palestinian refugees for generations, Doughty said Israel must comply with its obligations and respect the inviolability of United Nations facilities.
Center brought under Israeli control
Israeli forces evacuated staff from the UNRWA facility on Tuesday, took control of the compound and erected an Israeli flag in its courtyard.
Israeli forces also deployed around the Qalandia refugee camp and Kafr Aqab. Raids, searches and field interrogations targeting Palestinians were carried out in the area.
UNRWA condemns entry
UNRWA strongly condemned the unauthorized entry into the center, calling it a matter of serious concern. The agency said it was unacceptable for armed security forces to enter a United Nations facility without the permission or approval of the United Nations.
UNRWA said the facility was protected under international law by the privileges and immunities granted to the organization, emphasizing that the center’s inviolability must be fully respected.
