On Wednesday morning, Ukraine sent hundreds of drones to targets in Russia. The most notable part of the attacks occurred in St. Petersburg, known as Vladimir Putin's hometown, where black smoke rose over the historic city center.
The attack took place just hours before Russia's leading annual economic forum began in St. Petersburg. With this move, the Kiev administration once again demonstrated its ability to reach deep into Russian territory.
Highlights
- Ukraine launched attacks on Russian targets with hundreds of drones.
- It was announced that an oil export terminal in St. Petersburg was hit.
- Smoke and damage were reported in the city ahead of the economic forum.
- Russian officials said 50 drones were shot down in the Leningrad region and 13 towards Moscow.
- In an attack on a bus in the Russian-controlled Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine, 7 people were killed.
Critical targets in St. Petersburg
St. Petersburg officials reported that emergency response teams conducted damage assessments in the area following the attacks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said important facilities on Russian soil were hit throughout the night.
Zelensky noted that the St. Petersburg Oil Terminal was among the targeted locations. The drones heading to the terminal reportedly traveled over 600 miles.
The Ukrainian leader described the long-range attacks as "necessary long-range sanctions to approach peace." This statement showed that Kiev continues its strategy to pressure Russia's war economy.
Russia's statement on downed drones
Alexander Drozdenko, governor of the Leningrad region, announced that 50 Ukrainian drones were intercepted by air defense systems throughout the night. At the same time, Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin stated that 13 drones approaching the capital were shot down.
St. Petersburg Mayor Alexander Beglov reported that emergency teams worked at the scenes in the city after the attacks. The extent of the damage in the region is being evaluated.
Deaths in Donetsk
In another part of Ukraine's attacks, a passenger bus was targeted in the Russian-controlled Donetsk region. Denis Pushilin, head of the administration appointed by Moscow in the region, said 7 people lost their lives in the attack.
These attacks came after a major airstrike Russia launched on Ukraine the day before. At least 22 people were killed and over a hundred injured in that strike.
While airstrikes between the two sides have intensified recently, the lack of progress in ground clashes and the deadlock in peace talks are notable. The economic forum in St. Petersburg stands out as a showcase of Russia's effort to send a message of economic resilience despite war and sanctions.
Context: The forum in St. Petersburg annually brings together high-level Russian officials, business representatives, and foreign delegations. According to the Kremlin, this year, for the first time in many years, a US delegation will also participate in the event.
