The 31st session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, COP31, will be held in Antalya in November under Türkiye’s presidency. Türkiye’s UN Permanent Representative Ahmet Yıldız said the conference would focus on achieving concrete results in climate action.
COP31 targets concrete results
Yıldız spoke on behalf of Türkiye at a special event titled "A Planet Ready for the Future: Rebuilding Trust Through Climate Action" held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Yıldız said the climate action agenda aims to bring governments, international organizations, financial institutions, the business community and civil society together to achieve concrete results, and noted that COP31 would be held in Antalya.
Focus on adaptation and early warning systems
Yıldız said recent developments, including the devastating floods in Nepal, had once again demonstrated the vulnerability of communities to risks linked to climate change.
He said these developments highlighted the importance of adapting to climate change and strengthening resilience to its consequences, adding that these areas require sustained attention.
The diplomat stressed the need to strengthen early warning systems for different types of threats and to increase communities’ capacity to respond to climate-related risks.
Yıldız said it was particularly important to provide developing countries with broader access to climate finance, technology and capacity-building opportunities to turn adaptation priorities into concrete action.
Türkiye-Australia partnership
Yıldız said Türkiye was assuming the COP31 presidency at a time of growing geopolitical uncertainty and increasing skepticism toward climate change, adding that this demonstrated Türkiye’s commitment to multilateral cooperation and international engagement on climate issues.
Yıldız said COP31 would be based on a special partnership between Türkiye and Australia. Under the arrangement, Australia will chair the negotiation process, while Türkiye, as COP31 president, will set the overall direction of the work and lead the climate action agenda.

Yıldız said the initiatives reflected a determination to bring climate goals closer to concrete and practical steps, adding that the needs of developing countries would also be taken into account. He called on UN member states to contribute to these efforts while considering their national circumstances and priorities.
Leaders’ summit in Antalya
Yıldız said Türkiye expected senior representatives to attend the leaders’ summit to be held in Antalya on November 11-12 as part of COP31. He said long-term results would depend on countries and other relevant parties continuing to uphold their commitments after the meeting.
