A major upset occurred in the women's singles at Wimbledon. Last year's champion, Poland's Iga Swiatek, bowed out in the third round after a 2-0 defeat to the Philippines' Alexandra Eala.
World No. 29 Eala defeated third seed Swiatek 7-6, 6-2 in 2 hours and 14 minutes. With this result, the 21-year-old Filipina advanced to the fourth round at Wimbledon for the first time in her career, becoming the first Filipino tennis player to reach this stage at a Grand Slam tournament.
Eala will face Italy's Jasmine Paolini in the next round. World No. 13 Paolini defeated Greece's Maria Sakkari 6-1, 6-2 in 65 minutes to book her place in the fourth round.
Swiatek, a six-time Grand Slam champion, won her first Wimbledon title last summer by defeating Amanda Anisimova 6-0, 6-0. However, in this year's tournament, she had a tough time in the first round against Taylor Townsend and nearly got eliminated.
Meanwhile, world No. 2 and Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan also bowed out, losing to Belgium's Elise Mertens 7-6, 6-1. This result was recorded as one of the biggest surprises of the tournament.
