In Cappadocia, one of Turkey's most popular tourism destinations, 256,777 tourists participated in hot air balloon tours in the first half of 2026. The flights, which take place amid fairy chimneys and unique valley landscapes, continue to be among the most sought-after activities for domestic and foreign visitors.
Currently, 27 companies in the region operate 160 hot air balloons. Although flights can be conducted on an average of 220 days per year, weather conditions play a decisive role. According to data from the Turkish Directorate General of Civil Aviation, only 90 days of flights were possible in the January-June period due to heavy rainfall and strong winds.
The monthly breakdown is as follows: 21,022 people took balloon tours on 9 days in January, 21,545 on 8 days in February, 27,765 on 13 days in March, 55,472 on 18 days in April, 57,775 on 17 days in May, and 73,198 on 25 days in June, when the weather was most favorable. In the same period last year, flights were conducted on 223 days, and 754,098 visitors experienced this activity.

Rain and wind reduce flights
İsmail Sucu, Vice President of the Domestic Tourism Committee of the Association of Turkish Travel Agencies (TÜRSAB), told an AA correspondent that despite the diversity of tourism in Cappadocia, balloon tours remain the region's main symbol and most in-demand activity.
"Cappadocia is a place where nature, history, and culture meet in harmony. The region, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, is a paradise for culture and nature tourism enthusiasts. Tourists get the chance to see all these beauties from the air by balloon. Cappadocia is one of the rare places that offers flight opportunities over a wide area; one feels as if gliding over a giant open-air museum."
Sucu noted that the number of flights decreased somewhat in 2026 due to prolonged rainfall and strong winds, saying, "As of the end of June, we had only 90 flight days. During this period, 9,954 balloon flights were conducted. Nevertheless, we continue to be the region where the world's most impressive balloon flights take place."
Unique scenery mesmerizes tourists
Balloon pilot Oğuzhan Alkan stated that the simultaneous ascent of dozens of balloons into the sky creates a festive atmosphere and an unforgettable visual feast for guests. Emphasizing that interest in balloon tours has increased significantly in recent years due to the influence of social media, Alkan added:
"Today, ballooning in Cappadocia has almost surpassed even the fairy chimneys. Around 150 balloons take off every day. No other country in the world conducts flights on this scale. That's why guests from all over the world come here to see this sight with their own eyes and to rise into the air."
Alkan noted that tourists who hike in the valleys later board balloons to watch the same landscapes from above, saying, "One of Cappadocia's biggest surprises is the sunrise. In the early morning hours, we greet the sunrise together with dozens of balloons, and this unique scenery truly mesmerizes our guests."
