Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar, winner of the 2015 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, attended Mersin University’s (MEU) opening ceremony for the 2026-2027 academic year and delivered the opening lecture to students at the Mediterranean Cultural Center. Addressing the students who filled the hall, Sancar said that although he has lived in the United States for about 45 years, he introduces himself as Turkish everywhere in the world.
Sancar said, “When the Nobel Committee asked, ‘How should we announce you?’ I said, ‘I’m Turkish.’ I am proud of that.” He added: “Science has no nationality, but scientists do.”
“There is no other way”
Reminding students that there is no shortcut to success, Sancar said, “You will work hard and put in the effort. There is no other way.” Sancar also shared for the first time in the lecture a new, as-yet-unpublished study in the field of DNA repair.
Mersin Governor Atilla Toros and MEU Rector Prof. Dr. Erol Yaşar also attended the ceremony. The university’s advanced technology center was named the “Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar Advanced Technology Education Research and Application Center.” Referring to his family’s history stretching from Mardin to Mersin, Sancar said he considers both cities his hometown.
