Canada’s Ambassador to Türkiye Marcel Lebleu visited ASELSAN, Türkiye’s largest defense electronics company, where he was presented with a commemorative plaque.
On Oct. 13, Lebleu toured Baykar’s Özdemir Bayraktar National Technology Center in Istanbul and received a model of the Kizilelma unmanned fighter. The back-to-back visits by the ambassador, who took up his post in July, come after years of strain in defense ties.
From embargo to domestic optics

Canada suspended drone optics exports to Türkiye in 2020 after the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and in April 2021 cancelled 29 permits, including for Wescam cameras used on Bayraktar TB2 drones. TB2s were then fitted with ASELSAN’s domestically developed CATS electro-optical system.
Ottawa dropped the restrictions in January 2024 after Türkiye’s parliament approved Sweden’s NATO membership. Project Ploughshares, citing trade data, has reported Wescam sensor shipments to Türkiye worth up to $123 million between summer 2024 and early 2025.
