Galatasaray marked its 121st anniversary with a series of events. The program began with a ceremony at the grave of club founder Ali Sami Yen in Feriköy Cemetery.
Galatasaray President Dursun Özbek, vice president Metin Öztürk, board members Can Natan and Ömer Sarıgül, Board of Directors Chairman Aykutalp Derkan, Galatasaray High School Principal Mustafa Reşat Dabak and members of the club community attended the ceremony.
Özbek said the anniversary program would continue at Galatasaray High School after a visit to Ali Sami Yen's grave and the laying of a wreath at the Atatürk Monument in Taksim. He commemorated with mercy and gratitude those who had contributed to the club's achievements.
Özbek sets championship and European targets
Dursun Özbek said there were no easy matches in the Trendyol Süper Lig this season and that all teams were ambitious. He stated that Galatasaray wanted to win its fifth consecutive championship and its 27th title overall.
Özbek said the club also had major ambitions in Europe and aimed to build on last season's success. He said Galatasaray would return to league action against Kasımpaşa before facing Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League.
Statement on the refereeing committee debate
Özbek renewed his call for changes to the structure of the Central Refereeing Committee. Referring to the detention of committee chairman Ferhat Gündoğdu, Özbek argued that uncertainty remained over the committee's chairman and referees shortly before the leagues were due to begin.
Özbek said the federation's silence was deepening the debate and that it needed to announce as soon as possible how the administration would be structured. He also said the results of the Turkish national football team in its recent matches had fallen short of expectations and that the federation's response was awaited.
Program at Galatasaray High School
The events continued at Galatasaray High School after a wreath was laid at the Atatürk Monument in Taksim. In addition to Özbek and Derkan, former club presidents Adnan Polat and Alp Yalman, board members, club members and athletes from different branches attended the program.
At the beginning of the program, a video highlighting Galatasaray's 121 years of sporting achievements was shown. Özbek said the club had become a major institution through its culture rooted in education, traditions and a strong sense of belonging.
Özbek said Galatasaray would continue winning in Türkiye, pursuing success in Europe and representing the country in the best possible way. He added that the club placed importance on young athletes developed through its academies growing in line with Galatasaray's values.
Alp Yalman, the most senior member attending the event, placed the club's 121st anniversary plaque on the commemorative register. Sıla Koloğlu, a 22-year-old Galatasaray track and field athlete, presented the plaque to Yalman.
Certificates of membership and medals were presented to members of the board of delegates who had completed 50 years of membership. The national and international awards and trophies won by Galatasaray athletes over the past year were presented; after being displayed by discipline, the trophies were handed over to museum officials.
