Germany has extended its Patriot air defense mission in Türkiye under NATO until April 2027. The unit stationed in Malatya includes about 150 German military personnel.
The German delegation to NATO announced in a social media post that the Patriot unit’s mission had been extended. The unit was deployed to Türkiye in June and was initially scheduled to remain there until September 2026.
The announcement said the Bundeswehr makes an important contribution to NATO’s air defense and supports the alliance’s burden-sharing across all its flanks. It said NATO’s decision to strengthen its ballistic missile defense was a response to the conflict linked to Iran.
The Patriot system operates within NATO’s network
German soldiers operate the system as part of NATO’s integrated air and missile defense network in eastern Türkiye. The Patriot system is used to detect and intercept aircraft, cruise missiles and some ballistic missiles.
A typical Patriot battery includes a command center, radar, missile launchers and support equipment. Extending the mission is intended to support NATO’s air defense as tensions between the United States and Iran continue in the region.
