Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton harshly criticized Joe Biden's decision to re-enter the 2024 presidential race. Clinton said the decision was a "terrible mistake" for Biden himself, his political legacy, and the country.
In an interview with David Remnick in Manhattan, Clinton recalled that Biden had previously said he would not run again. According to her, if Biden had announced this plan toward the end of 2023, a wider race could have taken place within the Democratic Party.
Clinton argued that if Biden had withdrawn, not only Kamala Harris but also a governor, senator, or another figure could have emerged. The former secretary suggested that in such a scenario, whichever candidate emerged could have defeated Donald Trump.
Biden, on the other hand, came under pressure after his contentious televised debate with Trump in June 2024 and withdrew from the race a few weeks later. Democrats then put forward Harris as the presidential candidate.
Clinton's remarks were seen as striking because she had openly supported Biden while the election process was ongoing. In posts she made in June 2024, she said she would vote for Biden and stated that she supported him on the economy and immigration.
Clinton had also called for joining the Biden-Harris team in January 2024, emphasizing that the election was critical for democracy and reproductive rights. For this reason, her latest statement is being compared again with her previous stance during the election period.
No response came from the Biden camp regarding Clinton's latest remarks. The statement reignited debates within the Democratic Party about the 2024 election process.
