The electricity production data for May released by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources indicates a historic production level in hydropower plants. Total electricity generation in May reached 27.15 billion kilowatt-hours.
Record production in hydropower
Hydropower plants produced 11.71 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity last month, setting a new monthly record in terms of volume. This figure constituted 43.1% of total May production.
Share of wind and solar increased
In May, wind energy produced 2.39 billion kilowatt-hours (8.8%) and solar energy produced 3.72 billion kilowatt-hours (13.7%) of electricity. The combined share of wind and solar in total production reached 22.5%.
Share of domestic and renewable resources at peak
Last month, the share of domestic resources in total electricity generation rose to 85% with 23.07 billion kilowatt-hours, while the share of renewable resources increased to 72.3% with 19.64 billion kilowatt-hours. Both ratios were recorded at historic levels.
Peak also seen in the first five months of the year
According to ministry data, in the period from January 1 to May 31, hydropower generation reached 46.4 billion kilowatt-hours, wind energy generation reached 18 billion kilowatt-hours, and solar energy generation reached 14.2 billion kilowatt-hours, the highest values for similar periods.
During the same period, electricity generation from domestic resources saw the highest levels in volume at 106.5 billion kilowatt-hours, while generation from renewable resources reached 88.1 billion kilowatt-hours.
Assessment from Minister Bayraktar
In a post on his social media account, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar said, "In May, the share of domestic resources in electricity generation reached 85%, and the share of renewable energy reached 72.3%."
Bayraktar stated, "Our hydropower plants, which are the locomotive of this success, set a new record with 11.71 billion kilowatt-hours of production. Thus, we met 43.1% of our total electricity generation from the power of water."
The Minister said, "We are transforming our country's unique energy potential into value, and we are advancing decisively towards our goal of a Fully Independent Turkey in Energy by utilizing our domestic and renewable resources in the most efficient way."
