Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi made important statements on current issues, from gun safety to the fight against new-generation criminal organizations, during an interview on tv100. Referring to examples also seen in school shootings, Çiftçi said people who store firearms where children can reach them could face nearly three years in prison, provided no other crime has been committed.
Minister Çiftçi announced that requiring people who receive gun licenses to have steel safes is being planned. He said the new regulation would ensure that gun owners store their licensed firearms in steel safes.
Çiftçi said licensed gun owners will be required to keep their weapons in a locked cabinet or a steel safe out of children's reach. As in Germany, compliance will be checked through home inspections, the minister said.
In the video, Minister Çiftçi explains on the tv100 program how criminal organizations use children and discusses the planned regulation on the safe storage of firearms. Çiftçi draws attention to the “use-and-discard” tactic that criminal organizations apply against children.
“We have shifted all our focus to this area”
Drawing attention to changes in the structure of new-generation criminal organizations, Çiftçi said, “In the past, the mafia had a specific center and hierarchy. It had members. Now new-generation criminal organizations are organizing on social media or digital platforms. That is why fighting them is more difficult than fighting other mafia structures. That is why we have shifted all our focus to this area.”
Çiftçi’s statements came as an investigation into the new-generation armed criminal organization known publicly as the “Daltons” continues. The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office had announced that five suspects were arrested after being identified as preparing an armed attack on Fenerbahçe supporters’ leader Cem Gölbaşı as part of the investigation into the organization.
Sayan Kaya: “It will not go unpunished”
Minister Çiftçi also answered a question about former Family and Social Policies Minister Fatma Betül Sayan Kaya, who was arrested as part of the fund investigation. Saying that Sayan Kaya was “one of the symbolic figures” in the fund investigation, Çiftçi said, “I can say that those involved will not get away with it.”
In this section, Çiftçi shares his assessment of the fund investigation.
