Favorable weather and sea conditions following the start of the fishing season on September 1 enabled fishing boats in Istanbul to return with larger catches. The stalls offer a wide variety of fish, particularly bonito, anchovies, horse mackerel, whiting and red mullet.
Yaşar Gün, president of the Istanbul Fish Sellers' Tradesmen's Chamber, said the season had started well and that the boats were returning full. Gün said bonito was selling for between 100 and 150 lira depending on its size, while anchovies and horse mackerel were also abundant.
Variety at the stalls increases
Gün said this season was different compared with last year and that they expected the abundance to continue throughout the fishing season. Saying that shopkeepers were pleased with sales, Gün said people in the Marmara region could consume more fish this year.
Gün said he expected the fish to grow even larger with the rain and colder weather, adding that this could contribute to lower prices. He said the abundance of bonito, anchovies, horse mackerel, whiting and red mullet was at its highest level in the past 10 years.
Gün said public interest in fish was high and sales at the stalls were performing well. He added that the abundance of fish was pleasing both shopkeepers and consumers.
Bonito becomes the most sought-after fish
Erkan Sarıyaprak, president of the Kumkapı Fish Market Association, also said the season had started very well and that this year was one of the periods with the greatest abundance of bonito in the past 10 years. Sarıyaprak said anchovies, horse mackerel and red mullet were also plentiful, adding that bonito had emerged as the most sought-after fish.
Sarıyaprak said rain could help bonito grow and cold water could contribute to the fish's flavor. Saying they expected more fish, Sarıyaprak advised people to consume fish according to the season.
Sarıyaprak said bonito could be consumed in September, bluefish in October and small bluefish in November.
