Istanbul Technical University’s İTÜNOM UAV Team finished second in the Combat UAV Competition held at Siirt Airport as part of TEKNOFEST, organized by Baykar and hosted by the Siirt Governorship.
With this result, the team took part in the Champions’ Parade held as part of TEKNOFEST Southeastern Türkiye at Şanlıurfa GAP Airport.
Podium finish despite technical problems
İTÜNOM UAV Team captain Ziya Yaman said they reached the podium despite difficult weather conditions and technical problems following a year of preparation. Yaman said they experienced communications problems during the competition and that the high temperatures affected some of the aircraft’s electronic components.
Yaman said the team had prepared for the competition with the goal of winning, adding that second place was an important achievement but that they had expected to finish first.
14-year-old team targets the top spot
Yaman said the İTÜNOM UAV Team had a 14-year history and had participated in the Combat UAV Competition since TEKNOFEST was founded. He noted that the team had never finished outside the top three in the competition and described it as the team’s signature event.
Yaman said they had set more ambitious goals this year and announced that they were preparing for an event in the United States and the Combat UAV Stars Competition, which only the top five teams can enter, in addition to the Combat UAV Competition.
Yaman said the team was preparing for three different competitions in the same year and had not given up on its goal of reaching the top. He said preparations were intense, adding that team members spent most of their time in the workshop.
The team handles design and production
Yaman said the team handled every stage of the aircraft’s development, from design and production to software. He added that seeing the aircraft they built themselves fly and achieve success was a source of pride for the team.
Students showed interest in the team’s stand
Yaman said they met visitors from different age groups at the Champions’ Parade, with children and families showing particular interest in the team’s work. He said primary, middle and high school students, as well as university students, visited the stand, where the team explained the competition process and how the aircraft was prepared.
Yaman said the team’s work at Istanbul Technical University motivated high school students. He added that preparing for competitions alongside their university courses contributed to students’ technical and personal development.
