Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev dismissed Defense Minister Dauren Kosanov after 14 soldiers died during a naval exercise in the Caspian Sea.
The decision was announced by the presidential press service in a statement published on the presidency's website and social media accounts. The statement said that Kosanov had been removed from his post as defense minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Seventeen soldiers were swept into the sea during the exercise
The incident occurred on September 24 during a naval exercise in the Mangystau region on the Caspian Sea coast. Seventeen soldiers were swept into the sea as they were disembarking from a boat after weather conditions deteriorated.

Fourteen of the soldiers died and three were rescued. A criminal investigation was opened into the incident, and five Defense Ministry personnel, including the chief of the General Staff and the first deputy to the navy's commander-in-chief, were detained.
Investigation commission established
Following the incident, Tokayev ordered the establishment of a commission on September 26 to conduct a comprehensive review of the situation at the Defense Ministry.
Kosanov was appointed defense minister in 2025 and was appointed to the same post again by Tokayev in September.
