Istanbul Anatolian 27th High Criminal Court announced its verdict in the case over the death of 21-year-old footballer Kubilay Kaan Kundakçı, who was killed in a shooting in Ümraniye on March 19. The court sentenced Alaattin Kadayıfçıoğlu to life in prison for intentional killing. Singer Aleyna Kalaycıoğlu, tried on charges of inciting intentional killing and failing to report a crime, was acquitted and released. Her mother, Zuhal Kalaycıoğlu, was also acquitted of incitement.
The indictment had sought life sentences for Kadayıfçıoğlu as well as Aleyna and Zuhal Kalaycıoğlu. In his final opinion on Oct. 6, however, the prosecutor said there was no conclusive evidence that the mother and daughter incited the killing, and asked for up to one year in prison and release for Aleyna Kalaycıoğlu for failing to report a crime.

Victim’s mother: “Aleyna incited my son’s killing”
Speaking at the hearing, the victim’s mother, Ülker Kundakçı, said she forgave none of the defendants and that “the one who incited my son’s killing is Aleyna.” She fell ill during the hearing and was taken out of the courtroom. The Kundakçı family protested Kalaycıoğlu’s acquittal outside the courthouse after the verdict.
In her final words, Aleyna Kalaycıoğlu said she had been in prison for about seven months, could not have foreseen what happened and only wanted to collect her dog that day. Kadayıfçıoğlu argued that he drew the gun to deter the other side and had no intention to kill.
How the shooting happened
According to the indictment, rapper Vahap Canbay, who wanted to reconcile with his former girlfriend Aleyna Kalaycıoğlu, asked his friend Kundakçı for help on the night of March 19. Canbay’s group went to the music studio where Kalaycıoğlu was, and an argument broke out. A man who got out of one of two cars that arrived opened fire on the parked car of Canbay and his friends. Kundakçı was seriously wounded and could not be saved at the hospital.
Security camera footage cited in the indictment shows Kadayıfçıoğlu getting out of a car at 22:57, with a gunshot heard about three seconds later. Seven people were arrested after the incident, and 10 defendants stood trial.
