Uzbekistan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Mirvahid Azimov became the new secretary general of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS). At the OTS’s 13th Summit in Ankara, the position was transferred from Kyrgyz diplomat Kubanychbek Omuraliev to Azimov after Omuraliev completed his four-year term.
Azimov’s appointment took place at the Council of Heads of State meeting convened on October 30. Azimov became the first Uzbek citizen to serve as the organization’s secretary general. The Ankara Declaration, adopted at the end of the summit, also conveyed wishes for success to the new secretary general.

“I will direct efforts toward concrete projects”
Thanking Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and the leaders who supported his candidacy, Azimov said he viewed his new position as a great trust, honor and responsibility. “I will direct activities and initiatives toward concrete projects and work to bring our brothers even closer together,” Azimov said.
Azimov stressed that the Turkic world could become one of the centers of global economic development between Europe and Asia if the region’s geography, natural resources and intellectual potential were brought into harmony.
Omuraliev reviews four years in office
Omuraliev, who handed over his position, said the organization had evolved from a consultative platform into an institution with strong structures. According to figures provided by Omuraliev, 32 new mechanisms had been established since 2023, bringing the number of cooperation mechanisms to 65. The combined gross domestic product of member and observer countries exceeded $2.4 trillion in 2025, while total trade reached $1.27 trillion.
Omuraliev said trade among member countries remained below its potential, that the OTS Cube Satellite Project was in its final preparations before launch, and that a road map extending to 2027 was in place for defense industry cooperation.

Azimov served as deputy secretary general of the OTS from 2020 until May this year. Appointed Uzbekistan’s deputy foreign minister on May 26, Azimov received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in international law from the University of World Economy and Diplomacy. The diplomat, who has more than 20 years of experience at the Foreign Ministry, also worked for four years at the Secretariat of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Beijing.
At the summit, the rotating OTS chairmanship passed from Azerbaijan to Türkiye. It was decided that the organization’s 14th Summit would be held in Uzbekistan in 2027.
