North Korea conducted an intermediate-range strategic missile launch drill at dawn on Saturday, October 3, under the supervision of leader Kim Jong-un, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Sunday. KCNA said the missile, launched toward the northeast to train troops operating the "hypersonic strategic weapon system," hit a target 1,000 kilometers away in the East Sea.

"We must continue our responsible efforts nonstop to constantly and repeatedly make the enemy recognize the reliability and fatality of our strategic offensive means," Kim was quoted as saying. South Korea’s military said the missile was fired from the Wonsan area and flew more than 700 kilometers, while Seoul’s defense ministry called the launch a violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions.
