Speaking at the Sultanbeyli Municipality Mass Opening and Groundbreaking Ceremony for Cultural, Educational and Social Investments, Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş said the district had developed over the years through investments and services.
Kurtulmuş said President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had attached particular importance to investments in Sultanbeyli since his tenure as mayor of Istanbul. He added that Sultanbeyli Mayor Ali Tombaş had continued service projects since taking office.
Kurtulmuş said cities could not stand still while reforms were being carried out in the economy, defense industry, foreign policy, law and democracy, describing cities as important indicators of Türkiye's development. He said a strong Sultanbeyli reflected a strong Türkiye.
Kurtulmuş also expressed his pleasure that the name of his late father, Dr. İsmail Niyazi Kurtulmuş, had been given to one of the centers opened at the ceremony. He said his father had been his first teacher and guide, adding that he had devoted his life to charitable service, scholarship and educating people. He commemorated his father with mercy and gratitude.
Emphasis on global tensions and diplomacy
Kurtulmuş said the world was experiencing one of its most difficult periods since World War II, arguing that the failure to rebuild the global system was increasing conflicts and tensions. He said Türkiye prioritized security and stability and had maintained its stability in a difficult region.
Kurtulmuş said Türkiye's fundamental choice in the face of conflicts around it was to keep channels of diplomacy, negotiation and dialogue open. Describing the Russia-Ukraine War as having turned into a prolonged war of attrition, he said establishing peace between the two countries was important for the Black Sea, Europe and the world.
Addressing the regional effects of the conflict between the United States and Iran, Kurtulmuş said developments around the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb were affecting the global economy. He said the rise in oil prices to approximately $120 had affected many countries, including Türkiye, and maintained that the United States and Iran were continuing talks on a solution and a final agreement.
Assessment of Palestine and Gaza
Kurtulmuş said one of the most important problems in the region and the world was Israel's actions in Palestine. Arguing that the Palestinian issue could not be explained solely by Gaza and Hamas's actions on October 7, Kurtulmuş said Türkiye was conducting political and parliamentary diplomacy on Palestine.
Criticizing Israel's policies in strong terms, Kurtulmuş said the international community should respond to the suffering endured by Palestinians. He expressed his hope that Palestine would eventually be free.
Goal of a terror-free Türkiye
Kurtulmuş said Türkiye needed to strengthen its internal security, describing leaving the terrorism problem behind as the top priority in domestic policy. Saying that important steps had been taken toward the goal of a terror-free Türkiye, Kurtulmuş said they expected the terrorist organization to hand over its weapons and dissolve itself within the framework of the relevant legal regulations.
Kurtulmuş said the end of terrorism would strengthen the peace economy and increase production in every part of Türkiye. He said the goal of a terror-free Türkiye was important not only for Türkiye but also for the region, arguing that Türkiye's complete elimination of terrorism would contribute to establishing a terror-free region.
Kurtulmuş said strengthening Türkiye's internal security would end the impact of divisive projects that, he said, had been implemented in the region for nearly a century. He said different communities needed to act together again in unity and solidarity. He added that Türkiye should assess global developments in line with its own goals.
Following Kurtulmuş's speech, groundbreaking and opening ceremonies were held by video conference. The City Library, Hamidiye Youth Center, Fetih Grove Social Facilities, Dr. İsmail Niyazi Kurtulmuş City Thought Center, and Aydos Castle Promotion and Exhibition Hall were opened.
Ground was also broken for the Akşemsettin Youth Center, Qur'an courses for children aged 4 to 6 to be built in the Battalgazi and Mimar Sinan neighborhoods, Ahmet Yesevi Kindergarten, the Aydos Social Facility Project and the Sultanbeyli Terminal. AK Party Istanbul Deputy Yahya Çelik and Sultanbeyli Mayor Ali Tombaş addressed the ceremony.
