Özmen Yeltekin, director of the Trakya University Natural History Museum, announced that stork chicks in Edirne have begun migration preparations.
Yeltekin stated that the chicks, which stay in the nest for about 60-70 days, have now reached the maturity to fly. Frequently flapping their wings in their nests, the chicks are preparing for the long migration journey that will start in the second week of August.
Providing information about the storks' migration route, Yeltekin said, "They will first cross the straits to Anatolia, then continue to Africa via the Middle East. They cover about 20,000 kilometers in total round trip."
Explaining that the chicks are fed by their parents with frogs, snakes, fish, and various rodents during their time in the nest, Yeltekin stressed that the quality of the areas where storks feed and stop over is critical for the continuation of the population.
"The existence of quality stopover and living areas is directly linked to the continuation of healthy stork populations. This year was quite abundant in terms of chick numbers. We frequently observed 4-5 chicks in the nests," said Yeltekin, adding that storks born in Thrace will cover 8 to 12 thousand kilometers depending on the region they head to.
Noting that the storks will start migrating as of the second week of August, Yeltekin stated that the migration period is approaching and the chicks' preparations are continuing.
