Under the "Muğla Strawberry Project" launched in 2018, high-value-added strawberry production has become widespread on small and fragmented agricultural lands. Through the project, new strawberry orchards have been established on a total of 824 decares to date, providing employment for 1,648 people.
As a result of the efforts carried out by the Muğla Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry with the support of the Governor's Office, the strawberry production area across the province increased from 457 decares before the project to 1,614 decares. An average of 4,100 tons of strawberries are produced annually in the city, and this production generates an economic volume of approximately 820 million lira.
For the project, which was implemented in nine phases, a total budget of 18 million 18 thousand lira was used, with grant support of 50 to 75 percent from the Governor's Investment Monitoring and Coordination Directorate (YİKOB).
The aim of the project was determined as increasing the participation of women farmers in production, supporting family incomes, and reducing rural-to-urban migration.
Full Marks from Producers
Ersan Öztürk, who produces strawberries in the Bencik neighborhood of Yatağan district, said he has been growing strawberries for about 7 years. Stating that strawberry production makes a significant contribution to the family budget, Öztürk said, "May God bless our state. Thanks to strawberries, I married off one son, and hopefully I will marry off my second son as well."
Öztürk noted that the product attracts interest with its aroma and quality, and they send the strawberries mainly to Marmaris, Bodrum, and Milas. "This year I planted strawberries on 6 decares. We get an average of 3 tons per decare. Before starting production, I worked as a dolmuş driver for many years and we were struggling to make ends meet. My wife was also engaged in animal husbandry and tobacco farming, and our income was going to pay off debts. Thank God, after starting strawberry production, we have become economically comfortable," he said.
Mehmet Bağcı, one of the producers who planted strawberries for the first time this year, also expressed his satisfaction with the yield. Stating that he worked in the construction sector and did animal husbandry for many years, Bağcı said, "I left those jobs and turned to strawberry farming. I am very pleased with the production and my income, and I plan to continue production from now on."
Selda Bağcı, who works in the field with her husband, stated that production directly contributes to their family budget.
