UK Middle East Minister Hamish Falconer responded to the letter regarding developments in Northern and Eastern Syria and supported the agreement signed on January 29 between the SDG and the Syrian interim government. Falconer said the agreement envisages the integration of both military and civil institutions.
Falconer emphasized that this agreement is a critical step for a stable and united Syria. In his statement, he pointed out the importance of the arrangement in creating a new political and administrative framework on the Syrian ground.
Emphasized Kurdish rights
The British minister stated that the agreement officially framed, for the first time, the civil and educational rights of the Kurdish people in Syria. This expression revealed that the text touches not only on the security aspect but also on social and administrative rights.
Falconer also evaluated the appointment of Nureddîn Ehmed, nominated by the SDG, as the Governor of Hasakeh as an important development in terms of implementing the agreement. It was reported that this step is notable for the realization of the new arrangement on the ground.
London's Kurdish policy
The letter stated that the UK continues to support not only the Kurdish communities in Syria but also those in Turkey, Iraq, and Iran. Falconer noted that the London administration supports the development of Kurdish rights and encourages their full participation in social life in the countries they live in.
It was conveyed that the Kurdish diaspora is also part of this approach. Thus, the UK's message also included political and social support for Kurdish communities within a regional framework.
Call for an inclusive solution
It was stated that the protection of the rights of all Syrians, regardless of ethnic or religious identity, is fundamental in the UK's Syria policy. Falconer drew attention to the importance of social cohesion and an inclusive governance approach.
Falconer said that London continues its contacts with both the SDG and the Damascus interim administration and expressed that support for the political transition process will continue. He also stated that delivering aid to civilians affected by recent violent incidents is among the priorities.
Falconer emphasized that Syria can only achieve lasting stability through a political process that respects the rights of all citizens, is inclusive, representative, and non-sectarian.
