The Istanbul Health Directorate announced that three beaches in the city have been awarded the international Blue Flag in 2026. The Karaburun and Yeniköy beaches are on the Black Sea coast, while Kumluk beach is on the Sea of Marmara.
According to the statement from the directorate, water samples taken from Istanbul beaches each summer are subjected to laboratory tests. The Blue Flag is awarded to beaches that meet water quality, safety and environmental criteria.
However, reaching these award-winning beaches from the city center is quite difficult. The beaches on the Black Sea coast are located about 60 kilometers north of Istanbul, in an area close to Istanbul Airport. Kumluk beach is 95 kilometers west of the center. There is no direct public transportation to the beaches; a one-way taxi ride costs at least 50-70 dollars.
Turkey ranks third among countries with the most Blue Flag beaches worldwide. While 580 beaches in the country hold this award, more than 340 of them are located in tourist provinces such as Antalya and Muğla.
The Blue Flag award has been presented annually by the international Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) since the late 1980s. Russia, meanwhile, launched its own beach rating system in 2022 as an alternative to the Blue Flag.
