A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) and Pakistan’s National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) to establish a pilot composting unit at the university’s H-12 campus in Islamabad.
The project, which will be implemented in line with Türkiye’s Zero Waste vision, aims to convert organic waste from campus cafeterias, student dormitories and green spaces into compost. The unit is expected to process 100–150 kilograms of organic waste daily.

Compost to be used in agricultural research plots
The compost produced is planned for use in the university’s agricultural research plots and landscaped areas. Offering part of the compost for sale is expected to contribute to the project’s sustainability.
The Zero Waste movement was launched in Türkiye in 2017 under the auspices of Emine Erdoğan. The United Nations General Assembly declared March 30 International Zero Waste Day through a resolution led by Türkiye.
