Turkey is preparing to host a first in modern pentathlon. The European Modern Pentathlon Championships will be held in Istanbul from August 3 to 9. The senior-level championship will take place in Turkey for the first time.
A total of 153 athletes from 22 countries, including 67 women and 86 men, will compete in the championship. Medals will be awarded in individual and team rankings across fencing, obstacle course, swimming, and laser run disciplines.
Turkey will be represented by 15 athletes, 7 women and 8 men, at the event.
All eyes will be on Turkish team leader İlke Özyüksel. Özyüksel won bronze medals at the European Championships in 2016 and 2017, and also stood on the podium at the world championships and World Cup finals. She placed fifth at the Tokyo Olympics and sixth at the Paris Olympics.
Turkish Modern Pentathlon Federation President Serhat Aydın said that hosting the senior European Championships for the first time is a historic event for Turkish pentathlon, adding, 'This championship is a testament to the growing popularity of modern pentathlon in Turkey.'
