The Darfur Regional Humanitarian Aid Commission announced Thursday that 5,450 tents sent by Türkiye had been delivered to displaced people in Sudan’s North and East Darfur states.
The tents were provided through Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).
Fires left thousands of families without shelter
Abdulbaki Mohammed Hamid, Darfur’s humanitarian aid commissioner and humanitarian affairs coordinator, said the project was implemented at a critical time because the rainy season had begun, fires had broken out in displacement camps and thousands of families had been left without shelter.
Hamid thanked Türkiye and AFAD for responding to the Darfur government’s calls for assistance.
Hamid also highlighted the role of the International Organization for Migration in a project to provide a total of 30,000 tents supplied by Türkiye for displaced people in Darfur and Kordofan.
Türkiye donated 30,000 family tents
The International Organization for Migration announced on December 10, 2025, that the Turkish government had donated 30,000 family tents through AFAD for displaced families in Sudan. The tents were provided to meet urgent shelter needs, and the project was carried out with the International Organization for Migration, which operates under the United Nations.
AFAD also announced on April 25, 2026, that it had provided 30,000 shelter tents to displaced people in different parts of Sudan. The agency said the aid was implemented in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the International Organization for Migration.
New call for aid
The Darfur official said displacement had increased and humanitarian conditions had worsened in Umbro, Malha, Kornoy, Tina and Kutum, areas of North Darfur state, and called on international and local organizations and donors to urgently provide shelter materials.
The Turkish Red Crescent, the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency and the Türkiye Diyanet Foundation also carry out humanitarian and health assistance programs in various parts of Sudan.
War in Sudan
Tens of thousands of people have been killed and approximately 13 million displaced in the war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, which has continued since April 2023. The conflict has caused one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises, according to assessments by the United Nations and international organizations.
