Two SF-260 Marchetti trainer aircraft belonging to the Philippine Air Force collided midair during a training flight at Fernando Air Base in Lipa, Batangas province.
Air Force spokesperson Colonel Alvin Jay Capinguian announced that the accident occurred at 3:51 p.m. local time on Friday and that both aircraft crashed within the boundaries of the base. Four pilots were killed in the crash, while no other deaths or injuries on the ground were reported.
Capinguian said their priority was the safety and well-being of the personnel involved in the crash, adding, "The Air Force honors the service and sacrifice of our fallen aviators." A comprehensive investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the crash.
As a precaution, the entire fleet of SF-260 trainer aircraft used to prepare pilots for more advanced assignments was temporarily grounded until the investigation is completed.
