At least 16 people were killed and 32 injured in a magnitude-7 earthquake that struck China's southwestern Tibet Autonomous Region on Thursday night, according to initial assessments. The epicenter was identified as Baqên County in Nagqu. More than 300 homes collapsed in the quake.
A total of 300 police officers and 347 firefighters and rescue workers were sent to the region to take part in search and rescue efforts. Eleven of the injured are in serious condition, while 21 people with minor injuries are receiving treatment in hospitals. There are concerns that the death toll could rise.

The epicenter was 183 kilometers northeast of Nagqu and the earthquake occurred at a depth of about 10 kilometers. In January 2025, an earthquake measuring 6.8 in magnitude killed 120 people in Tingri County, administered by Shigatse in Tibet.
