U.S. special envoy for Syria Tom Barrack welcomed the YPG’s decision to dissolve itself on Tuesday. Barrack said the development had contributed to the emergence of a vision for a united Syria that includes all Syrians.
Barrack said progress had been made under U.S. President Donald Trump’s ongoing Middle East Plan. He noted that Trump’s leadership had paved the way for the Syrian Democratic Forces to be integrated orderly into Syrian state institutions.
Integration and recognition of Kurdish
Barrack said the step had transformed the division of the past into a lasting partnership and once again given the Syrian people the opportunity to shape their common future.
Barrack advocated recognizing Kurdish in education and giving Mazloum Abdi and Ilham Ahmed important roles within the Syrian government. He said this would demonstrate respect for the leadership and sacrifices of Kurdish partners, as well as their contribution to regional stability.
Agreement between the Syrian administration and the YPG
Barrack said the process meant that former parties with differing views had reached a diplomatic agreement that would strengthen Syria’s sovereignty. He said the approach represented genuine integration rather than producing winners and losers.
The YPG’s decision to dissolve was announced by Mazloum Abdi at a press conference on Tuesday. The Syrian administration and the YPG reached an agreement on January 29 providing for a ceasefire and the group’s gradual integration into state institutions.
Barrack concluded his statement with the words: “One army, one government, one state.”
