Final stage reached
Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that work on Istanbul Airport's fourth main runway has reached its final stage. In a written statement, Uraloğlu said the runway is targeted to enter service in the final quarter of the year.
Uraloğlu stated that they are strengthening Istanbul Airport's infrastructure in line with increasing passenger and flight traffic, and reminded that the airport currently operates with three main runways in a north-south orientation and two backup runways.
Features of the new runway
According to the information provided by Uraloğlu, the new runway, built on an east-west axis, will be 2,820 meters long and 45 meters wide. The provisional acceptance process is planned to be completed this month, and the runway is expected to begin operations after technical tests.
"With the new runway, we will increase operational flexibility and enable more efficient air traffic management by reducing taxi times. Especially when weather conditions are favorable, eastbound departures will take place from this runway."
Uraloğlu emphasized that the runway will also provide critical infrastructure for future quadruple independent runway operations. He stated that the new runway will contribute to safe operations in crosswind conditions and, with its proximity to hangar areas, will enable faster general aviation operations.
