The Underwater Research Association-Mediterranean Monk Seal Research Group (SAD-AFAG) is conducting a comprehensive study to monitor the habitats of Mediterranean monk seals on the shores of Foça and the Karaburun Peninsula from both land and sea. As part of these efforts, camera traps have been placed in caves inhabited by the seals for observation. Supported by the Karaburun Local Seal Committee, critical fieldwork was carried out in the Mordoğan Monk Seal Cave. The natural habitats of Mediterranean monk seals, with only about 120 adult individuals remaining across Turkey, continue to shrink due to construction and development pressures. Camera footage definitively confirms the presence of male, female, and juvenile individuals in the area, with males and females observed together especially in the Mordoğan habitats. Protecting these shores is of great importance for the future of the marine ecosystem and biodiversity. It is reminded that, according to regulations, entry to the seals' habitats is prohibited except for specially authorized and permitted teams.
