Montenegro aims to close the chapters in its European Union accession negotiations by the end of this year and become an EU member in 2028. Croatia has objected since July to Montenegro’s closure of the chapter on the transport sector.
The Zagreb government is accused of pressuring Montenegro to resolve some bilateral issues that emerged after the war in the region during the 1990s. This stance could make it more difficult for Montenegro to advance in its accession process.
Montenegro’s government does not expect an obstruction
Montenegrin Minister of European Affairs Maida Gorcevic said they did not believe Croatia would obstruct her country’s EU accession process.
Gorcevic also criticized a condolence message published by Andrija Mandic, the speaker of Montenegro’s Parliament, for Ratko Mladic, one of the chief perpetrators of the Srebrenica Genocide. The minister said Mandic’s stance absolutely did not reflect Montenegro’s position.
Croatian lawmaker emphasizes democratic values
Croatian MEP Suncana Glavak said in a statement in Brussels that the European Union’s enlargement was not limited to closing the negotiation chapters.
Emphasizing that commitment to democratic values was also important in the accession process, Glavak pointed to Montenegro. The Croatian government also reacted to Mandic’s condolence message for Mladic.
Ratko Mladic was sentenced to life in prison for the Srebrenica Genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
