The DHMİ General Directorate is taking an active role in two important projects financed by the European Union and carried out under the coordination of the SESAR Joint Undertaking (SESAR JU). Uraloğlu said in a written statement that the AI-focused AI4HyDrop Project was successfully completed, and the new generation air traffic management project ATMOSPHER earned the right to receive EU support.
AI4HyDrop project successfully concluded
Within the scope of the AI4HyDrop Project covering the 2023-2026 period, AI-based semi-dynamic airspace solutions were developed in urban areas. Uraloğlu provided the following information about the project's outputs: "Technological infrastructures were developed for tracking the acoustic, radio frequency, and visual signatures of UAVs. Additionally, studies were conducted for monitoring, evaluating, and creating recommendation systems for pre-flight autonomous flight plans."
Thanks to the project, capabilities such as monitoring the flight permit suitability of UAVs in critical urban areas and ensuring operator communication were gained. Uraloğlu said, "The project outputs will make significant contributions to the knowledge base for future unmanned air traffic management systems."
EU approval for ATMOSPHER project
After the completion of AI4HyDrop, the consortium, which includes DHMİ, earned the right to receive EU support for the ATMOSPHER Project. Uraloğlu stated that the consortium includes Istanbul Technical University (İTÜ) and TÜBİTAK BİLGEM, as well as the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation (EUROCONTROL) and air navigation service provider organizations from Bulgaria, Czechia, and Romania.
Within the scope of the project, new generation digital air traffic management platforms will be developed in the areas of "flight route-based operations" and "airspace demand-capacity balancing". Uraloğlu summarized the goals as follows: "With this project, we aim to strengthen international coordination in air traffic management, increase operational efficiency, and develop innovative solutions compatible with European air traffic management systems."
Uraloğlu emphasized that DHMİ's active participation in EU-supported research and development projects strengthens Turkey's competence in aviation technologies. He said, "Projects carried out in a wide area ranging from AI-supported unmanned aerial vehicle operations to digital air traffic management strengthen our country's international collaborations while also increasing its contribution to the development of aviation technologies."
