The Israeli military struck an apartment in the Rimal neighborhood of western Gaza City, near Al-Shifa Hospital, at dawn on Wednesday, Oct. 14. Maryam Ahmed Ghanem, about 3 years old, was trapped as the flat caught fire and was carried out by young men who ran inside.
Footage of the rescue captures one of them shouting through thick smoke and flames, "Oh God, there are children here, they’re alive." The group was led by journalist Ali al-Jaafarawi.
No way through to her mother
Al-Jaafarawi also tried to reach Maryam’s mother, Reem Awad, but the smoke was too dense. She was killed in the strike. Maryam, who suffered burns and serious wounds, is being treated.

According to local sources, Maryam’s father was killed early in the war, leaving her an orphan.
In Gaza, putting out fires and pulling out the wounded often falls to residents until ambulance and civil defense teams can get through.
