The Health Ministry warned that excessive sugar consumption may lead to unhealthy eating habits and increase the risk of diseases such as diabetes.
The ministry said that frequent consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks can lead to additional energy intake in liquid form and increase the risk of excess weight.
Screening and assessments carried out by family physicians
As part of primary healthcare services, family physicians conduct screening and assessments for various conditions, including excess weight and diabetes.
Under the 2025-2028 Action Plan for Combating Obesity and Promoting Physical Activity, implemented as part of the Health Ministry's Turkey Healthy Nutrition and Active Life Program, efforts are continuing to promote healthy eating habits, reduce the consumption of unhealthy foods and encourage regular physical activity.
Healthy eating habits should be developed in childhood
It was emphasized that a culture of healthy eating should be developed from childhood. Healthy eating habits acquired during childhood were said to play a role in shaping behaviors that individuals maintain throughout their lives.
The School Food Logo initiative conducted by the Health Ministry and partner institutions aims to help guide school-age children toward healthy food options.
Healthy living centers also conduct education and awareness activities for children, young people and adults on healthy eating, physical activity and diabetes.
Water and sugar-free drinks recommended
Water and sugar-free drinks were recommended as the first choice instead of sugary drinks. People were advised to consume whole fruit instead of fruit juice and to eat sweets and sugary products in small portions and less frequently.
The ministry also called for choosing lower-sugar options among similar products and assessing their sugar content by reading food labels.
It was stated that involving families and schools in efforts to combat excessive sugar consumption would help strengthen public awareness and support healthy eating habits.
