Economic ties between Türkiye and Kazakhstan are deepening with a new Turkish investment at Almaty Airport. TAV Airports CEO Serkan Kaptan and Kazakhstan’s Minister of Transport Nurlan Sauranbayev signed an agreement expanding the company’s ongoing investment program.
The agreement is based on a cooperation protocol signed in May by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. Under the new agreement, TAV’s total investment in Kazakhstan will rise to approximately $642.5 million.

Second phase to be completed by the end of next year
Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Kaptan said the airport’s first investment program, worth $288.7 million, was completed in 2024 and that the new international and VIP terminals had opened. Kaptan said the second phase, worth $353.9 million, would be completed by the end of next year.
TAV has operated Almaty Airport since 2021. The company’s subsidiaries also provide food and beverage, duty-free retail, passenger lounge, hospitality and technology infrastructure services at the airport.
Passenger numbers nearly doubled
Following operational improvements, the airport’s annual passenger numbers rose to 11.9 million in 2025, nearly doubling. During the January-September period of this year, the airport handled 9.47 million passengers, driven by an 11% increase in international traffic.
“Almaty Airport is one of Central Asia’s major passenger and cargo hubs thanks to its strategic location along the modern Silk Road and the Middle Corridor,” Kaptan said. As of the end of last year, 42 airlines were flying from the airport, Air Astana’s main hub, to 86 destinations in 30 countries.
