Prof. Dr. Adem Küçük delivered a presentation on the symptoms, historical development and treatment advances related to rheumatic diseases at the Patient-Physician Meeting program held in the Conference Hall of NEU Faculty of Medicine Hospital.
Drawing attention to delays in diagnosing rheumatic diseases, Küçük said patients may have to consult different medical specialties before receiving the correct diagnosis. Küçük said raising public awareness would help overcome problems in the diagnostic process, adding that they aimed to build awareness through meetings and social media.
He highlighted environmental factors
Küçük said rheumatological diseases were as old as human history, explaining that they do not emerge suddenly but develop over a certain period.
Küçük said environmental and air pollution had become a significant health problem and that environmental pollution was understood to trigger rheumatic diseases. He said smoking does not only cause lung and heart problems, adding that it can also directly trigger antibody formation and rheumatic diseases.
Küçük said environmental factors must be brought under control, noting that the risk of rheumatism could decline as people lose weight and avoid smoking.
Early diagnosis can prevent joint damage
Küçük said permanent joint damage could be prevented thanks to developing treatment options, urging people to consult a specialist without delay if they experience symptoms such as swelling and redness in the joints or lower back pain.
The program ended after Prof. Dr. Adem Küçük answered participants’ questions.
