In a written statement issued for World Marrow Donor Day, the Turkish Red Crescent said the number of active stem cell donor candidates had reached 1,251,677.
A total of 39,631 new donor candidates joined the system in the first eight months of this year. Men account for 63% of the active candidates, while women account for 37%.
Activities carried out under TÜRKÖK
The Turkish Red Crescent is continuing its work on donor recruitment, matching and transplant planning as part of the Turkish Stem Cell Coordination Center project, which it operates in cooperation with the Ministry of Health.
As part of the project, the health checks, accommodation and transportation needs of donor candidates are also covered. Ensuring that collected cellular products reach transplant centers quickly and safely is also among the Turkish Red Crescent's responsibilities.
Turkish Red Crescent President Prof. Dr. Fatma Meriç Yılmaz said more than 1.251 million volunteer donor candidates represented hope for patients awaiting stem cell transplants. Yılmaz said the increase in the number of donors raised patients' chances of being matched with a compatible donor candidate and strengthened families' hope.
Becoming a stem cell donor candidate
Healthy citizens between the ages of 18 and 35 who wish to become stem cell donors can apply at Turkish Red Crescent blood donation points.
After applying, candidates complete the TÜRKÖK Information and Consent Form. Three tubes of blood collected from candidates undergo the necessary tests, after which the results are transferred to the TÜRKÖK Bone Marrow Bank database and the individual is registered in the system as a donor candidate.
If a match is identified with a patient in the Ministry of Health's database, the Turkish Red Crescent contacts the donor candidate and arranges detailed tests. If the donor consents and is found to be suitable, the treatment process begins.
