President Donald Trump has said the United States may have gone too far in targeting Iran’s leaders during the war against the Islamic Republic. "We might have gone too far with the leaders because we don’t know who the hell we’re dealing with anymore," Trump told a rally in Youngstown, Ohio.
"I think we went too far. We could have stopped at level one. Level two and level two and a half was probably going too far," he said.
"Hard to find someone to make a deal with"
Trump acknowledged the difficulty of finding a counterpart in Tehran. "We’re having a hard time figuring out who the hell to deal with, to be honest with you," he said, adding that "nobody wants to be the president of Iran." Masoud Pezeshkian has held the presidency since July 2024.

Trump also claimed Iran had lost its air force and all 159 of its ships, which he said were "resting beautifully at the bottom of the sea." The claims could not be independently verified.
A war that began in February
Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei was killed in the U.S.-Israeli strikes that began the war on Feb. 28. The Assembly of Experts named his son Mojtaba Khamenei as successor on March 9, but he has not appeared in public since. Senior official Ali Larijani was killed in an Israeli airstrike on March 17.
Tensions remain high in the Strait of Hormuz, where the United States is enforcing a naval blockade of Iranian ports. According to the U.K. Maritime Trade Operations center, there have been at least 19 attacks on commercial vessels since Oct. 1.
