Turkish Airlines Chairman of the Board and Executive Committee Şeker said the company aims to expand its fleet to around 850 aircraft over the next 10 years as part of its growth plans.
The interview, conducted during the Farnborough International Airshow, was published on a digital platform on Saturday. It was also published in print the following day in The Sunday Times, the Sunday edition of The Times.
Turkish Airlines overtakes British Airways in passenger numbers
The Times described Turkish Airlines as one of Europe's fastest-growing airlines. It also said Istanbul Airport was strengthening its position in European aviation.
Turkish Airlines carried more than 92 million passengers last year, while British Airways served approximately 46 million during the same period, according to The Times. The report noted that Turkish Airlines' fleet of 559 aircraft had reached nearly twice the size of British Airways' fleet.
$50 billion aircraft investment plan
Turkish Airlines plans to invest approximately $50 billion in new aircraft over the next 10 years at list prices. In addition to expanding its fleet to around 850 aircraft, the airline aims to raise its annual revenue above $50 billion and serve 350 international destinations.
Investments in the fleet, flight network and passenger experience were highlighted in the interview as key elements of the company's plans for the coming period. Turkey's geographic position and Istanbul's role as a connection point between Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East were described as providing Turkish Airlines with access to a broad transfer market.
Turkey's hosting of approximately 60 million visitors a year also generates direct passenger demand. Turkish Airlines can offer passengers traveling east from Europe 18,000 different flight options from an average European city.
Services to the United Kingdom and Australia to be expanded
Şeker said the United Kingdom was an important market for Turkish Airlines. He explained that the company aims to launch flights to London City Airport in addition to its operations at Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh.
The report also covered Turkish Airlines' plans for Australia. With the addition of next-generation Airbus A350 aircraft to its fleet, the airline aims to launch nonstop flights from Istanbul to Sydney, Melbourne and other major Australian cities.
Investments focused on the passenger experience
Turkish Airlines' investments to improve the passenger experience include new Crystal Business Class suites. The suites are intended to provide passengers with greater privacy.
The premium economy cabin, positioned between economy and business class, is planned to enter service in 2028 with the new A350 aircraft. Accommodation services that allow transit passengers to explore Istanbul, along with investments in inflight entertainment and catering and the airline's global sponsorship strategy, are also part of the company's growth plans.
