As part of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to Ankara, Türkiye’s Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar met with Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Tim Hodgson. The two ministers discussed steps to develop cooperation in energy and mining in bilateral and expanded formats.
Bayraktar said nuclear energy was at the top of the agenda regarding Türkiye’s long-term security of supply. The talks addressed the applicability of Canada’s CANDU reactor technology in Türkiye and technical cooperation in this area. Bayraktar said they attached importance to diversifying technology options while increasing nuclear capacity and expanding the share of domestic industry in the nuclear value chain.

The joint declaration covering nuclear energy, LNG supplies, renewable energy and mining was signed in the presence of the leaders at a signing ceremony attended by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Prime Minister Carney. The declaration also established an agreement to strengthen dialogue among public institutions, regulatory bodies, research institutions and industry representatives.

The declaration highlighted global supply shortfalls and rising prices, while emphasizing Canada’s growing LNG export capacity. The parties agreed to facilitate talks between Canadian LNG project developers and potential long-term buyers.
