The Vodafone İzmir Data Center, established in İzmir’s Gaziemir district through a partnership between Vodafone Türkiye and DAMAC Digital, has been inaugurated. The facility’s first phase, covering approximately 7,500 square meters of indoor space, has entered service with a $100 million investment.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Uraloğlu said that in the era of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, the Internet of Things and autonomous systems, the power of countries is measured by their ability to produce, retain, process, protect and convert data into value on their own soil.
Uraloğlu said countries that establish data sovereignty would be the winners of the future, describing the newly opened center as a new “digital fortress” for Türkiye.
Capacity expansion in data infrastructure
Uraloğlu recalled that the foundation of the Türksat Data Center, covering an area of 35,300 square meters in Ankara’s Gölbaşı district, was laid in July. He said digital security infrastructure was being expanded through public- and private-sector investments.
Sharing data on Türkiye’s communications infrastructure, Uraloğlu said the number of broadband internet subscribers had approached 101 million, exceeding Türkiye’s population by approximately 20 percent.
Uraloğlu said the length of the fiber-optic network had reached 720,000 kilometers, an increase of approximately 13 percent from 637,000 kilometers in the same period the previous year. He said the number of fiber-internet subscribers had risen to 10.7 million, while their share of the fixed-broadband market had climbed to 50.5 percent.
Uraloğlu announced that there were approximately 87 million individual mobile users, excluding machine-to-machine communication subscribers, and that 5G, which began offering commercial services on April 1, 2026, had reached approximately 45 million subscribers.
Uraloğlu said mobile internet usage had risen to 5.578 million terabytes, while average monthly usage was 324.7 gigabytes for fixed broadband and 23.3 gigabytes for mobile broadband.
Total investment targeted to exceed $300 million
The facility, whose first phase has entered service, has infrastructure that can be expanded to up to 20 megawatts depending on favorable market conditions and customer demand. With this capacity increase, total investment is targeted to exceed $300 million.
İzmir Governor Süleyman Elban said data centers play a critical role in rapidly delivering the trillions of pieces of data processed in artificial intelligence applications to servers and users. Elban said such infrastructure needed to be established quickly for Türkiye to have a say in the digital world.
AK Party İzmir MP Mehmet Muharrem Kasapoğlu highlighted the importance not only of possessing information and data but also of processing and managing them. Kasapoğlu said ensuring that technology serves humanity should be the fundamental goal.
İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Cemil Tugay said the project would contribute to the digital transformation of companies in the Aegean Region and thanked everyone who contributed to the investment.
Vodafone Türkiye Chief Executive Officer Engin Aksoy said digital transformation determines the competitiveness of industries. Aksoy said that following the first phase, the investment was targeted to reach $300 million and capacity to reach 20 megawatts.
DAMAC Digital Senior Vice President Ma’an Manna said the facility would contribute to Türkiye’s global competitiveness and infrastructure.
AK Party İzmir MPs Ceyda Bölünmez Çankırı, Mahmut Atilla Kaya and Yaşar Kırkpınar, as well as AK Party İzmir Provincial Chairman Bilal Saygılı, also attended the ceremony. Following the speeches, protocol members inaugurated the data center and inspected the facility.
