Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar, the first Turkish scientist to receive a Nobel Prize, shared an anecdote about the jacket gifted to him by Baykar Chairman of the Board Selçuk Bayraktar at the 12th Turkish Medical World Congress in Istanbul.
Sancar said, "Selçuk gave me a Baykar jacket. It says KIZILELMA on the back. I walk to work. Our house is close to the laboratory. I always wear it."
Sancar said that KIZILELMA is now known in Chapel Hill, where the University of North Carolina at which he works is located, adding, "Everyone in Chapel Hill knows what KIZILELMA is." His remarks drew applause from the participants in the hall.
Congress continues in Istanbul
The 12th Turkish Medical World Congress is being held in Istanbul from October 29 to 31 under the theme "Productive Healthcare in the Turkish Medical World: Resilient Health Systems Against Global Health Threats."
He won the Nobel Prize for DNA repair research
Born in the Savur district of Mardin in 1946, Aziz Sancar won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Chemistry together with Tomas Lindahl and Paul Modrich for his work on DNA repair mechanisms. Sancar, who works as a professor of biochemistry and biophysics at the University of North Carolina in the United States (Chapel Hill), donated his Nobel medal to Anıtkabir in 2016.
Developed by Baykar, KIZILELMA is known as Türkiye's first unmanned fighter aircraft.
