Controlled water release has started at Deriner Dam on the Çoruh River in Artvin due to rising water levels. As the second tallest dam in Turkey, the facility's water level increased recently, prompting the opening of the gates.
Deriner Dam, which began electricity production on December 12, 2012, has a storage capacity of approximately 1.969 billion cubic meters. Standing 249 meters tall from its foundation, the dam's water level rose further due to heavy rainfall, snowmelt, and water released from the Yusufeli and Artvin Dams.
Capacity Reaches 94%
With the dam's capacity reaching 94%, the water volume rose to 1.85 billion cubic meters. Following this, the dam gates were opened to carry out a controlled water release.
The gates at Deriner Dam were last opened in 2019 for water release, making this recent operation a significant event after several years.
Residents Watch the Release
Prior to the release, relevant authorities issued necessary warnings. Announcements were made through municipal loudspeakers in the city center, and many residents, upon learning of the event, went to Salkımlı Village to watch the water release at the dam.
Some residents recorded videos and took photos with their phones, while others set up camping chairs to observe the release. The activity around the dam showed that the controlled operation attracted considerable local interest.
Due to its location on the Çoruh River and its large storage capacity, Deriner Dam is a critical point for water management in Artvin. The controlled release initiated after the rise in water levels aims to reduce flood risk and ensure the safe operation of the dam.
